Hybrid heat pump in winter

A hybrid heat pump runs on electricity for most of the year. During very cold periods, the central heating boiler kicks in, and it also provides your hot tap water. However, going gas-free is becoming increasingly attractive. Due to higher gas taxes and lower electricity taxes in 2026, every extra cubic meter of gas will become relatively more expensive, and every kWh relatively more attractive. This increases the structural advantage of going all-electric.

On the Dutch Budget Day (Prinsjesdag), it was announced that in 2026, energy taxes on gas will rise while those on electricity will fall. Gas will become approximately 4% more expensive per m³, and electricity will become approximately 10% cheaper per kWh. The policy is clearly steering toward fully electric heating.

To find out if your home is all-electric ready, you can keep an eye on a few things this heating season. If you see hardly any extra gas consumption in winter compared to summer, the heat pump is doing almost all the work. That is a strong signal that going all-electric is a viable option!

Watch for these three signs this heating season.

1. Your winter gas consumption remains low
   If your gas consumption during the heating season remains comparable to your consumption in the summer months, your heat pump is performing well.
2. Your boiler only starts for tap water
   The previous point shows that your central heating boiler only kicks in for hot water usage. It remains off for heating. Therefore, hot water via an all-electric solution is definitely feasible.
3. Comfort remains stable at low outdoor temperatures
   If you can keep your home comfortably warm at 0 to −5 °C without the boiler running, then all-electric is often very achievable.
