What are F-gases and why are they disappearing?

F-gases (hydrofluorocarbons) have long been used as refrigerants in heat pumps and air conditioners. Their major drawback is their substantial contribution to global warming. Their Global Warming Potential (GWP) is hundreds to thousands of times greater than CO₂. They also contain the forever chemicals PFAS.

For these reasons, the EU has decided to phase out F-gases. Significant restrictions already apply from 2025, with complete removal from new installations in subsequent years. For installers, systems using F-gases will simply no longer be permitted.

The impact on installers

For installers, the F-gas ban means:

• You will no longer be allowed to install new systems using these F-gas refrigerants.
• Maintaining and refilling existing systems becomes increasingly expensive because recycled F-gas must be used.
• Customers choosing an F-gas heat pump now receive a system that will no longer meet future requirements. Split heat pumps in particular will present replacement challenges in ten years.

In short, continuing to work with F-gases means missing out on experience with propane installations. Choose a system already prepared for the future. Weheat has used propane (R290) from the beginning.
