SilentHeat helps accelerate the energy transition

Heat pumps are crucial to sustainable energy, helping households go gas-free and preparing homes for the future. Yet some users and neighbours experience noise disturbance. That can discourage adoption, even though widespread heat pump use is essential to advancing the energy transition.

SilentHeat is an EU-supported project developing a heat pump with minimal noise impact. From smart software to noise-reduction innovations, our goal is to make heat pumps efficient, sustainable and as comfortable as possible.

SilentHeat started in mid-2025 and is now in full development. Initial results are expected in early 2027.

SilentHeat at a glance

The solution centres on a principle patented by ATA Mute, an Eindhoven University of Technology spin-off, for Anechoic Broadband Compact silencers (ABC silencers). This compact structure consists of at least two layers of perforated plates separated by a channel.

The holes in the layers are offset, forcing sound to find its way through. Combined with air resistance, this reduces noise across a broad spectrum from 2 Hz to 20 kHz, with up to 95% sound absorption.

The same concept can damp vibrations in a heat pump’s noisiest parts, significantly reducing overall noise. The project develops this technology to create:

A low-noise fan: ATA Mute’s technology will damp fan noise and can be integrated into surrounding components.

A low-noise compressor: An acoustic enclosure with an integrated ABC silencer to absorb compressor noise.

The project combines this technology with Weheat’s expertise in heat pump noise reduction.
