SilentHeat update: from compressor jacket to quieter fan

At Weheat, we develop heat pumps as a smart energy platform, with physical design determining how quiet, compact and pleasant they are in and around the home. Part of that hardware development is the European SilentHeat innovation project, in which we collaborate with ATA Mute, an Eindhoven University of Technology spin-off, on even quieter heat pumps. Our previous SilentHeat article appeared in February 2026. Since then, testing has progressed on two fronts. Here is the update.
What has been tested since the last update?
Going deeper: the compressor jacket
Weheat and ATA Mute have further developed the compressor jacket: ATA Mute’s ABC damping material is now integrated into the existing compressor enclosure instead of added separately. The goal is a noticeable noise reduction, especially below 200 Hz, where noise often feels unpleasant. Tests have been completed, with further rounds planned this year to validate and refine the technology.
Broadening the scope: the fan
Alongside the compressor, the fan is a major heat pump noise source. Weheat and ATA Mute are therefore investigating the butterfly hood, a part of the fan enclosure that prevents water from freezing onto it, combined with the same ABC damping material. The aim is to reduce fan noise just as with the compressor. This work is currently in the testing and research phase.
Why both compressor and fan?
The compressor and fan are among a heat pump’s loudest components. Making them quieter reduces the noise of the whole unit. Investigating both in parallel gives a fuller picture of where noise reduction has the greatest effect.
What comes next?
Further tests of both the compressor jacket and butterfly hood are planned this year. Eventually, both approaches will be combined in a pilot, testing them together on one heat pump. We maintain a fast pace: rapid testing and field deployment help us learn early what works in practice.
How did this collaboration begin?
ATA Mute approached Weheat with its ABC damping technology, leading to a joint SilentHeat application to OPZuid. Combining Eindhoven University of Technology’s high-tech acoustics research with Weheat’s practical heat pump expertise proved a natural fit.
