Cooling with a heat pump: here is how it works!

29 May 2025

Too hot at home? A major additional benefit of a heat pump compared to a central heating boiler is that your heat pump can also cool. Yep, you can enjoy a comfortable indoor temperature all year round. In this article, we explain how cooling with a heat pump works, what you need, and how to turn the cooling on.

Heat pump cooling in a nutshell

As you know, a heat pump heats the water in your radiators to warm your home. The heat pump can also reverse this process. It cools the water down and pumps it through your home. The radiators and the floor reach a lower temperature, which cools the entire house.

Don't expect air conditioning set to freezer mode. Just like with heating, there are no erratic spikes, but rather a controlled and consistent output. This provides quiet cooling where you can expect a temperature drop of about 2 to 3 degrees.

Good to know

· A heat pump lowers the room temperature steadily; don't expect an ice-cold airflow.

· The humidity often remains slightly higher than with an air conditioner, but still within comfortable limits.

· Success depends on the delivery system, sufficient cooling surface area, and the status of the electrical grid.

Can I also cool with my heat pump?

A heat pump is capable of cooling, but whether it works effectively depends primarily on your home and the installation. Cooling only works if the relatively cold water has enough surface area to absorb and dissipate the heat in the home.

What you need:

· Underfloor heating – ideal: large surface area, quiet operation.
· Low-temperature (LT) radiators or fan convectors – compact and powerful, often easy to add.

Unfortunately, this won't work with:

· Traditional high-temperature radiators – not suitable for cooling; they simply don't provide enough output with cold water.

Do you only have high-temperature radiators? Unfortunately, heat pump cooling is not possible. Replace them with low-temperature radiators.

Advantages over a standalone air conditioner

· One system, double the comfort – heating and cooling using the same equipment and piping.

· Low energy consumption – the compressor does not run, especially in passive mode.

· Whisper-quiet – no noisy air conditioning units, just calm, silent cooling

· Better air quality – lower risk of dry eyes, sore throats, or drafts.

· Less maintenance – no separate filters or condensate drains.

Tips for optimal summer performance

· Keep the sun out – close blinds in the afternoon to keep cooling demand low.

· Night cooling – let in fresh night air; this reduces the workload on your heat pump.

· Optimize your home – consider underfloor heating or low-temperature radiators during renovations; it’s the perfect time for an upgrade.

Technical details for the enthusiasts

We know there is an active Weheat community that loves to dive deeper into the technology and wants to know exactly how things work (hello Tweakers 👋). So, to wrap things up, here is a summary of all the techy details:

· Smart compressor management We continuously adjust starts and stops based on your home's heat output. If the heat dissipates smoothly (good output), we restart quickly. If it’s more restricted, we take an extra break. This prevents unnecessary starts, saving both energy and wear and tear.

· Crystal-clear measurements Before every cooling cycle, we run the circulation pump briefly. This allows us to accurately record the starting temperature and prevents measurement errors when switching from domestic hot water to heating.

· Energy-efficient distribution After cooling, the circulation pump pulses at low speed. This keeps the temperature in your floor nice and even, without unnecessary energy consumption or wear and tear.

· Adaptive cooling test & smart start Using our measurement data, we predict exactly when your heat pump has been cooling long enough to achieve results. The algorithm learns as it goes and immediately adjusts the start condition whenever your installation changes. This ensures cooling only starts when it’s truly effective.

· Smarter control logic We are sharpening our cooling control with our latest insights: advanced fan control, dynamic power regulation, and smart firmware upgrades. The result: even more reliable and efficient performance.

· Automatically the right control method Weheat recognizes modulating, on/off, and OpenTherm signals and adjusts its control accordingly. Prefer to fine-tune manually? You can choose the best option with a single click. This ensures your heat pump always operates using the smartest strategy.

What’s in it for you?

  • Maximum cooling capacity within your system's limits (typically ~3 °C below outdoor temperature).
  • More efficient consumption thanks to optimized start and stop times.
  • Self-learning comfort: automatically adapts to changes in your home or installation.
