This is not a single home but an entire portfolio comprising four housing types. That is precisely what the project is about, explains Jos Pietjou of Van Wijnen:

“You have 116 homes, but no two are alike. There are four different housing types, yet you want to use the same device throughout.”

For a housing association, that is no small detail. One system suitable for every housing type reduces complexity in purchasing, installation and maintenance across the portfolio.

Why the Weheat Flint was chosen

A project of this size is about more than installation: what happens afterwards matters most. Every Weheat heat pump can be monitored remotely, so a fault no longer has to wait for a resident to call. Ite Hoolsema:

“It is not just: here is a package, here is a heat pump. There is an organisation behind it too. You can monitor Weheat remotely and resolve faults in advance or make a call.”

Jos Pietjou sees this directly in maintenance planning:

“It saves maintenance and time. You also have the advantage of resolving a fault in advance, so residents experience less disruption.”

For an association managing hundreds of homes, this is the difference between reactive firefighting and planned, predictable maintenance.

Responding intelligently to grid congestion

Grid congestion is an increasing obstacle for housing associations upgrading at scale. Requesting a higher-capacity connection takes time, which is often unavailable. Jos Pietjou:

“Weheat is an intelligently controlled heat pump that responds to grid congestion. Previously, we had to request an upgrade to 3 × 25 amps for the homes. With Weheat, that is no longer necessary. That helps too.”

Weheat’s smart control keeps the heat pump within the homes’ existing electrical connection capacity. That means no waiting for the grid operator and no project delays.

From hybrid to fully all-electric

Of the 116 homes, two will become fully all-electric in this phase because their boilers have reached the end of their lives. The rest initially receive a hybrid system. Jos Pietjou:

“Of those 116 homes, two are becoming all-electric because their boilers need replacing. Wold & Waard already aims to make all the homes all-electric eventually.”

The Weheat Flint’s design offers a practical advantage for that ambition: the same outdoor unit can be used in a fully all-electric system:

“The advantage of Weheat is that you can use the same outdoor unit with an additional indoor unit, allowing the home to run all-electric.”

In practice, Wold & Waard can install hybrid systems today without needing new outdoor units when switching to all-electric later.
